Our story

Sam’s passion for physical therapy began at 23, along with a clear goal: to build a small, personalized clinic where patients receive focused, one-on-one care. His commitment to meaningful patient relationships and community-driven service led to the launch of Highlander Physical Therapy, a clinic dedicated to providing expert, individualized treatment in Bozeman.

Dr. Sam Foster, DP, DPT, founded Highlander Physical Therapy with a vision he first developed at age 23 — creating a small, patient-centered clinic where individualized care and genuine connection come first. After seven years as a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy, Sam remains committed to providing one-on-one, evidence-based treatment that helps people move better and feel stronger. His approach focuses on the whole body, recognizing that mobility, strength, and injury are deeply interconnected. Sam treats patients ages 10 and up, offering comprehensive care for injury prevention, injury management, post-operative recovery, chronic pain, balance deficits, strength imbalances, neuromuscular dysfunction, and movement asymmetries.

Highlander Physical Therapy is based in Bozeman, Montana, at 2304 N 7th Avenue — a location Sam chose after five years of calling Bozeman home. The community, the active lifestyle, and the opportunity to collaborate with Trifecta Fitness made North 7th the ideal place to establish his clinic. Sam’s holistic, movement-focused philosophy aligns perfectly with Bozeman’s outdoors-driven culture, and he looks forward to continuing to serve the community while enjoying his daily bike commute down 7th Avenue. Through Highlander Physical Therapy, Sam remains dedicated to delivering expert, personalized care that empowers patients to recover fully and return to the activities they love.

  • Dry needling is a skilled physical therapy technique that uses very thin, sterile needles to release tight muscles, reduce pain, and improve movement. The needle is inserted into trigger points—tight, sensitive bands within a muscle—to help relax the tissue, increase blood flow, and reset the neuromuscular system. This can lead to decreased pain, improved mobility, and faster recovery.

  • Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in injured or painful tissues. The shockwaves increase blood flow, break down scar tissue, and activate your body’s natural repair processes.

  • IASTM is a manual therapy technique using specialized tools to treat soft-tissue restrictions, scar tissue, and muscle tightness. By gliding these tools over targeted areas, physical therapists can improve tissue mobility, reduce inflammation, and promote better movement. IASTM is commonly used for muscle strains, tendinopathies, post-surgical scar tissue, and chronic pain conditions, helping patients move more comfortably and efficiently.

  • Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) is a training and rehabilitation technique that uses a specialized cuff or band to partially restrict blood flow to a limb during low-load exercise, allowing patients to build strength and muscle more effectively without heavy resistance.

  • Gait analysis is an assessment that examines how you walk or run to identify movement patterns, imbalances, or dysfunctions that may contribute to pain, injury, or performance limitations.
